Great Idea: Woolly Wall

A few years ago, I saw a living wall in an office building, and I thought it was the coolest thing.  I’ve wanted one in my house every since, but I was concerned it would be complicated (do I have to reinforce the wall because of the weight, how do you water the plants, will they receive proper drainage, etc).

Yesterday I saw this cool “sneak peak” on Design*Sponge, featuring many green walls made with WoollyPocket’s Wally Planters.  These look so easy!  They have watering and drainage covered, and they’re pretty simple to install on your wall – just use a few anchors for extra support.

We have an outdoor herb garden (that’s currently being attacked by slugs), but it only works for the summer months.  It would be great to hang some Wally Planters in the kitchen, and have a year-round herb and veggie garden.

Discounts and deals!

Happy almost weekend!  I wish I was at a lake, jumping off a dock like those guys up there.  That photo was taken from the Dockjumping Blog.  See, there really is a blog out there for everything.

Sorry, I don’t have a Funny on Friday today.  Instead, I bring you 3 deals that I came across this week – that should cheer you up if you’re stuck at your desk, wishing you could be jumping off a dock instead, like me:

1. Moo printing: 15% off your entire order.  That’s amazing.  Use promo code 2TP2XN.  It expires at midnight on Monday, so get shopping!  http://us.moo.com/en/

2. Joe Fresh Style: $10 off if you spend $50 or more.  The coupon expires on June 15, so you have some time.  You have to sign up for their email newsletters to get the coupon: http://www.joe.ca/en/coupon/login.aspx

3. Daily Groupon deals: I signed up for this daily email service, which sends you a “group coupon” aka a Groupon.  Every day a new deal for somewhere in Toronto is published.  Some days I take a quick look at the offer, and the delete it, as it doesn’t interest me.  But some days the deals are amazing – I got a ridiculous deal on a spa package last week, and this week I saw a good deal at a neighbourhood restaurant.  Check it out: http://www.groupon.com/toronto/

How Cool Is This? IdeaPaint

I came across the IdeaPaint website because it was featured in a roundup of good-looking minimalist web designs.  So I checked out the site for the design, but then I read more about the actual product.  Maybe you’ve heard of chalkboard paint – it was all the rage a few years ago.  Paint any surface, wall, etc. and you can write on it with chalk, and then erase it.  Too bad it usually ends up looking messy and chalky.  Enter IdeaPaint – a paint that turns any surface into a dry erase board.  No mess like with you get with chalk.  How cool is that?

I am seriously considering ordering some of this stuff and turning an entire wall in my office into an IdeaPaint dry erase wall.  I am an avid list-maker and an occasional doodler, so it would be cool have all that up on the wall instead of all the post-its and scraps of paper I have all over my desk.

The only thing I’ll put my pen to…

I love pretty paper.  I love fancy pens.  I love all things written.  But I’m pretty predictable when it comes to my notebooks of choice – I go old-school with Moleskine.  I’ve tried other brands, but I keep coming back to Moleskine because of the paper texture and the different shapes and sizes available (and available without lined paper – I don’t like lines).  I use this one for my notes on my biggest client (there are a lot of notes), and I use the smaller cahiers (available in three packs) for everything else.

I’m working on a web design right now that features a moleskine notebook as the background for the site.  More on that later.

Also, check out these laser-etched Moleskines – cool!

For You! A discount code for Moo

Remember when I said I was ordering new business cards from Moo?  I got some full size business cards featuring the artwork of various illustrators, and also 100 ready-made mini cards, all featuring illustrations by Marc Johns.

Well, they arrived this afternoon. As always, they look lovely.

Moo sent me a little promo code to pass on – 15% off your first pack of 50 Business Cards.  That would normally cost you $21.99 (which is already a crazy deal), but with 15% off, that’s only $18.69.  That’s a seriously good deal.

If you wanna take advantage of it, go to Moo and enter code G2MSCG at the checkout.

Note: I am not paid in any way to give this info to you.  I just seriously love Moo.

Update: Toronto City Neighbourhood Poster

Hey, remember this?  Well, I ordered my Toronto city neighbourhood poster, and got it in the mail less than a week later.  I picked up a ribba frame from Ikea yesterday, framed the poster, and hung it in my bathroom.  I figured, what better place for this brown and gold poster than in my brown bathroom?  It matches the walls, and gives you something interesting to look at when you’re doing your business.

Hide the Credit Cards: Target

When we head out on our little long-weekend “Art, Architecture and Outlet Malls” trip on Friday, I’m going to make sure we pop into at least one (if not more) Target locations.  Ooops, I mean “Tar-jay”.  (sidenote – I get the joke, it’s a cheap store with amazing deals and designer stuff, but seriously, the “Tar-jay” thing is getting a bit old)

I’m going to be on the lookout for this red dress for my friend Jen from the newly launched Zac Posen line.  But mostly, I’m super-pumped for Dwell Studio.  I’m hoping to get a new duvet cover for our bedroom – but which one to choose?  Look at all those choices (and there are many many more than just in that picture up there).  And maybe even a new rug for our dining room, since Isabel chewed our Pottery Barn one when she was a puppy.

I hope I can find some of the Liberty of London collection too.  How cute would these pillows be on the couch in my office?

“You Can Quote Me” biz cards

Check out these lovely “You Can Quote Me” ready-made business cards from my favourite online printer of all time, Moo:

All you have to do is add your info to the back, and you’re done!  I have to order more business cards for myself.  I thought I was going to just get my usual Marc Johns set (since he’s hilarious and whimsical and a little bit cheeky, like me)… but I might throw a few of these “You Can Quote Me” ones in there as well…

Toronto “city neighbourhood” Poster

Ork Posters makes amazing prints (sometimes screen printed, sometimes professionally printed) of cities, broken down by their neighbourhoods.  I got an email this morning saying that the Toronto posters they were working on are finally available!  Complete with all 178 Toronto neighbourhoods.  I am most definitely getting one of these… I just have to choose which colour combo I like the best: brown and gold, or red and white?  I’m leaning towards brown and gold…

update: I did order the brown and gold one!  Can’t wait for it to arrive.  Now I just have to think of where I’m going to hang it…

Typeface to drool over – Somewhat

Some people splurge on lipstick.  Or shoes.  I splurge on typefaces.  I was on the MyFonts website looking for something else, and I stumbled on the “Somewhat” font family.  This typeface is gorgeous.  I’m really drawn to hand-lettering lately, and it’s perfectly on-trend.  I have a project I’m working on right now that NEEDS this typeface.  Or at least, that’s how I’m justifying the purchase, ’cause I’m buying it right now.
