Typeface to Drool Over: Populaire

Wow, it’s been a long time since I’ve blogged about a font.  Must be all that baby stuff crowding my brain… but when I saw this typeface (called Populaire) in the MyFonts newsletter, I had to share.  Isn’t it fun?  I’d love to use this font in a website project (since it comes in a web font version too).  I’m glad to see the handwritten font trend is still going strong.

Favourite Colours

What’s your favourite colour?  I have two… brown and orange (on their own, definitely NOT together).  I love a rich, deep, chocolately brown, and a bright, vivacious, happy orange.

I have lots of brown in my home, but other than a few accents, I mostly shy away from using orange, since it can be overwhelming.  But this “best of orange” roundup over on Design*Sponge has me rethinking.  Don’t you just love that orange sofa?

Real Artists Ship

I love this desktop (and iPad and iPhone) wallpaper by Andrew Power.  It’s a quote from Steve Jobs, who apparently said it in 1983 to his team of worn-out engineers, trying to finish the first Macintosh computer.  This excerpt from the book Insanely Great by Steven Levy explains it in greater detail:

“Perhaps the most telling epigram of all was a three-word koan that Jobs scrawled on an easel in January 1983, when the project was months overdue. REAL ARTISTS SHIP… One’s creation, quite simply, did not exist as art if it was not out there, available for consumption, doing well… to make a difference in the world and a dent in the universe, you had to ship.”

Free Beginner Sewing Patterns for Baby Stuff

Remember a couple weeks ago when I wrote about my recent itch to “get my sew on”?  Well, I went and did it – I ordered a new sewing machine.  I got a good value model off the Costco website.

While I wait for my new toy to arrive, I’ve been looking up patterns.  I found this great roundup of 15 Free PDF Sewing Patterns for Baby Stuff over at Babble.com.  Don’t you love the one for the baby apron?  Now that Little C is eating solids, she definitely needs one of these!

Happy Thanksgiving!

It’s Thanksgiving weekend in Canada, so today we’re getting things together and packing up, as we’re heading to Muskoka tomorrow morning to spend the weekend with Ian’s family.

The weather is supposed to be sunny and pretty warm, so we’re looking forward to taking Little C for a walk in the woods to see the fall colours. She loves looking at trees. I think she’s kind of mesmerized by the leaves moving in the breeze.

I hope you have a lovely weekend, whatever you’re up to.

Pinhole Press is shipping to Canada!

I follow the Cup of Jo blog pretty regularly, and have been very impressed with the products featured from Pinhole Press.  Photo calendars, photo books, stationery, party invitations, cards, labels… all very clean and attractive.

I’ve been wanting to order from them for a while, but they didn’t ship to Canada.  Until now!  I just spoke with a customer service rep at Pinhole Press, and they said they are indeed accepting orders from Canada.  There’s just a little blip in the checkout process – for now, they don’t have it programmed to accept Canadian addresses and postal codes.  So here’s what you do:

1. Enter your entire address in the 2 address lines (ie – your street info on line 1, and then your town, province, and postal code on line 2).

2. In the Zip Code field, just enter 00000

3. Pick any US State you want for the State field – they’ll know it’s bogus

Then do the credit card stuff, and they’ll ship to you, at the same rates as they ship to American addresses.  That’s a deal!

I’m going over to Pinhole Press right now to start making things!

A list of FREE baby activities in Leslieville

Now that the weather is turning, I’ve been looking into playgroups and drop-in activities in the ‘hood for those days when the cabin fever sets in.

I’ve compiled a handy “week at a glance” style listing of the free activities for babies in Leslieville.  I know, the Edgewood Connection and the South Riverdale Parent/Child Centre aren’t “technically” in Leslieville, but they’re close enough.

You can download my PDF here.  And please let me know if there’s anything I’ve missed that can be added.  Hope to see you out and about at some of these activities!
