Jaime & Kevin’s Gorgeous Muskoka Beach Wedding

We were so happy to attend the wedding of our long-time pals Jaime and Kevin in Muskoka this past weekend.  The shindig was held at Jaime’s cottage (where her parents now live year-round), about 3.5 hours north of Toronto.  Although it was really cold, it was a gorgeous autumn day in a beautiful location.

Jaime is good friends with Alison Westlake (aka Coriander Girl) who did the stunning flower arrangements.  Another good friend, Jed Corbeil (owner of the Griffin Pub), performed the ceremony in a grass skirt and Hawaiian lei (!!!)  Jed’s brother, Sam (who runs Sawdust City Brewing) helped sling beer.  It was a really lovely wedding, that was very true to who Jaime and Kevin are.  Don’t you love it when people have authentic events, and aren’t all formal just for formality’s sake?

Would You Stand At Your Desk?

I remember reading an article a few months ago about the supposed perils of sitting all day long while you work.  It sounded pretty bad – the Mayo Clinic says that sitting for prolonged periods of time (like I do, for hours every day at work) is associated with all kinds of increased health risks.  Yikes.

Then, last week, one of my clients told me she tries to use a standing desk as often as possible.  I assumed a standing desk is just a taller desk, that you stand next to instead of sit (like they do at the Apple store).  I did a Google search and found a bunch of articles about different standing desks – this one from Wired is my favourite.  Wow, do standing desks ever run the gamut of price and design.  Most of them are really ugly, and have exorbitant price tags.  Of course, you could try to make your own – the websites Ikea Hackers and Apartment Therapy have some good ideas for DIY standing desks.

Forbes ran a great article about the pros and cons of standing while you work, and offers some tips before you give it a try.  I also enjoyed this piece in Fast Company from David Zax, who tried a standing desk and gave up after a week.  I’m afraid that’s what would happen to me too – I would give up.  So, for now, I’m going to stay in my chair.  I do try and get up often though – I walk around when I’m talking on the phone, and I take little breaks throughout the day.

What about you?  Would you stand at your desk all day if you thought it would significantly improve your health?  Or do you just get up and walk around every hour or so?

What Are The Six Songs of You?

The Guardian UK’s Music department has a fun little website set up with the music service Spotify.  It’s called “Six Songs of Me” and it encourages you to choose 6 tunes that define who you are (the first song you ever bought, the song that always gets you dancing, the song that takes you back to your childhood, your perfect love song, a song you’d like to have played at your funeral, and an “encore” song).

It stinks to use if you’re in Canada, since we don’t have Spotify here, so you can’t play your six songs after picking them.  But it is kind of fun to think of which tunes you’d pick.  Here are my six.  What would yours be?

20 Movies to See This Fall

The Atlantic did a great piece on Monday, calling out 20 movies to see this fall.   I’m looking forward to Looper (because it was written and directed by Rian Johnson), all the stars in Cloud Atlas (yep, from the book), and of course the new James Bond movie, Skyfall (did you know it was directed by Sam Mendes? crazy).

Which movies are you looking forward to seeing?  Have you seen anything good recently?

Rent a Village… Crazy!

I was perusing Airbnb yesterday, as I often do, looking at gorgeous places to rent for holidays.  Not that I’m planning a holiday right now – I just like to look.

I came across this insane listing – rent an entire village in Switzerland for $60,000 a night. Crazy, right?  I googled it, and found that it’s a company that rents out the town to companies and groups looking to hold a big event.  Think corporate retreats or big meetings.  Isn’t that a cool alternative to a nasty conference centre?

Here’s the listing on Airbnb, and here’s the Rent A Village website for more info.

My New Toy/Experiment… A Moka Pot

Lately I’ve been really into drinking americanos (espresso and boiling water – when combined, it tastes like the best cup of coffee you’ve ever had).  I used to order cappuccinos or lattes at fancy coffee bars, but now I’m all about the americano.

When we were in the States last week, I saw a Bialetti Moka Express Pot (aka “stovetop espresso maker”) on sale at Target, and bought it on a whim.  I’d love to learn to make a good americano at home.  I’m already a little bit of a coffee snob (I don’t like drip coffee – I use a Bodum French Press most days), so I figure this is the logical next step.  I’ve also heard that you can’t really get a real espresso maker for less than $500 (the silly little ones you can get for $100 or less don’t heat up enough for real espresso – apparently the steam needs to be a certain crazy hot temperature).

So I fully understand that a Moka Pot isn’t technically making espresso, but rumour has it, it gets pretty darn close.  I’m now watching tutorial videos online to learn more about how to make a good cuppa with the Moka Pot.  Any tips from you, readers?

PS – Have you hear about the Aeropress?  That’s the next coffee toy I want to try.

I Watched Two Great Movies On The Weekend…

… a witty drama, and a goofy comedy.  Carnage is an adaptation of the play Gods of Carnage by Yasmina Reza, and you can totally tell it’s a play when you’re watching it.  The language is so snappy, and all the action takes place in one room.  It’s about two couples who meet because their kids got into a fight on the playground, and it’s fantastic.  The characters are such assholes, and the actors do such a great job making them entertaining.  Even Ian enjoyed it, and I honestly thought he was going to hate it.

We also watched Wanderlust with our pals Hilary and Tristan.  The movie’s a total piece of fluff, but I have a soft spot for David Wain comedies, so I really enjoyed it.

Have you seen any great movies lately?
