Brooklyn Fave: Pink Olive

Pink Olive calls itself a “whimsical gift shop”, which is a pretty good description.  It’s a teeny tiny little store in Park Slope, Brooklyn, filled with baby things, paper things, and random lovely giftie things.

Pink Olive just started stocking Uppercase Magazine (cool), sells prints by Anna Bond/Rifle Paper Co (cooler), and Maggie Gyllenhaal shops there (coolest).  I know because we saw her there this afternoon.  She’s as beautiful in person as she is on the screen.

I couldn’t resist buying this “Better Days” 2-print set by Rifle Paper Co.  Pretty sweet, no?

Pink Olive ships to Canada through their website if you see anything you just have to have…

New Favourite Shoes

Yesterday I got a new pair of shoes – chocolate brown classic Toms.  I had been looking for them for a while in Toronto, but I couldn’t find my size in the few stores I checked.  I had no problem finding them at DNA Footwear in Park Slope, and they are amazing.  Today I wore them for hours, walking around the Met Museum.  They’re starting to stretch and mold to my feet, and are getting even more comfy.  I love my Toms!

Old Timey Bathing Suits

I went bathing suit shopping at the Bay on the weekend, as they’re having a 50% off sale.  It was hell.  I must have tried on at least 45 suits, and almost all of them looked terrible.  I did eventually find two that worked, so it ended up being okay, I guess.  A disheartening experience overall though.

Later, when I was complaining about the whole ordeal to friends, Jenna told me about Esther Williams Swimwear.  You know, Esther Williams, the swimming movie star from the ’40s and ’50s?  She has a line of old timey bathing suits that flatter the bodies of real women.

Jenna has the “classic sheath” bathing suit, and says that the construction is top notch.  I’ve seen it – it’s too cute.  I checked out the other looks available, and was thrilled to see that they have the one-piece “classic bandeau” style that I love.  The two bathing suits that I picked up at the Bay are that style, and it really seems to work for me.  Now I know where to get more if I can’t find them in traditional stores.  I think I’d get polka dot or cherries!

PS – I’m reading a book right now from England, and they call their bathing suits “bathing costumes”.  Don’t you love that?

Kinnon’s At The Arts Market This Weekend

Looking for something to do this weekend?  Pop by the new Arts Market in Leslieville (1114 Queen St East).  Kinnon will be there selling some of her prints, including pieces from her awesome Toronto’s My Home series (which you might remember from this), and her travel/food illustrations (which you might remember from this).  Arts Market is on from 10am – 7pm Saturday and Sunday.  I’ll be there on Sunday!

Home Print

I was pretty pumped to see illustrator Tad Carpenter’s home featured on Design*Sponge a while ago (I have a Tad Carpenter print hanging in my living room).  For the feature, he was asked to finish the sentence “What I love most about my home is…”.  Of course, since he’s awesome, he didn’t just finish the sentence… he turned it into a print.  Which is now available for sale in white or brown on his website.  I would love to have this for the entryway to my home.

Cute Skirts from Roots

I love summer weather, but I struggle with summer clothing.  I like the idea of shorts, but they really don’t look good on me.  I saw Carol wearing a cute skirt a couple weeks ago, and when she told me it was from Roots, I picked up one of my own. This skirt is the best – it’s made out of supersoft jersey.  Feels like yoga pants.  I like it so much, I might get another in a different colour.  They’re on sale right now too for only $28!

There’s More to Buffalo Than Shopping

I bookmarked this article in the Toronto Star a while ago and kind of forgot about it.  But I’m glad I’m revisiting, as it’s a good one!  Titled “How I Overcame my Prejudice Against Buffalo,” it features all kinds of cool ideas for a weekend getaway to Buffalo, NY.  Most of us just head there for the shopping, but there’s much more.  I knew the Albright Knox Gallery was worth a visit, but hadn’t heard about Allentown, the bohemian artsy part of town full of bars, restaurants, and shops.

Next time I head to Buffalo for my outlet-mall and Target fix, I’ll be sure to check out the Blue Monk bar… just look at that beer list (pictured above)!  Ian went with a friend last year and said they don’t serve ketchup – just different kinds of spiced mayo for your frites.  Amazing.

And after last year’s trip to Fallingwater, I think a visit to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Martin House Complex is a must.

A Classic: Monogrammed Canvas Totes

This past weekend we drove up to Muskoka to visit Ian’s parents.  Now that Little C is on the scene, we have so much stuff to haul around.  I jammed everything she’d need into my Lands End canvas tote (complete with my monogram).  I just love this bag – it’s my go-to piece for throwing things together.  I love how durable it is, I love the classic look, and I can’t get over the price (talk about value – a small tote is just $17.50!).  Last year I got everyone in my family one for Christmas.

See all the Lands End tote bags here.  And come on, if you’re going to get one, you have to get it monogrammed.  Monograms are so old-fashioned and classy!
