School Supplies

Even though I’ve been out of school for years and years, the day after Labour Day always means “back to school”.  I think I’ll celebrate the fall season by picking up a few new notebooks and maybe some pens.  I love Moleskine notebooks, but I’m intrigued by Field Notes, a side project from graphic designer Aaron Draplin.  And I can’t get enough of my favourite pens – the bright orange Stabilo Bionic Worker, in black ink, of course.  I can get both (and so much more) at my favourite stationery shop, Laywines in Yorkville.  Seriously, hide the credit cards.

Daily Drop Cap Prints

You may remember a few months ago when I wrote about my love for type designer and illustrator Jessica Hische.  She just announced that letterpress prints of her amazing Daily Drop Cap series are available for sale through her online store.

At just $40 each, you can get a bunch.  I would love to have an A and an I for me and the mister.  But I suspect Ian might not like the I.  Oh well, maybe just one for me then!

Poketo + Target

Yeah, I know, we’re not supposed to like Target anymore because of that whole funding the right political scandal thing.  But with Dwell Studio, Liberty of London, and a whole bunch of other rad designers doing product lines for the big box store, I can’t help but love Tar-jay.

I just read about Poketo’s upcoming line at Target.  They don’t have much info yet – full details will be released next week.  For now you can see their sneak peak on their website here.  They list a few of the artists that will be featured, including Camilla Engman and Lisa Congdon.  Can’t wait for more details…

Happy Canada Day!

Today I’m out at my cottage with friends, enjoying the fine Canadian tradition of lounging in the lake-side hammock, reading, drinking beer, and enjoying the sunshine.  Okay, maybe those aren’t strictly Canadian activities, but I’ll let it slide.

Kind of Canada related – check out Modern Karibou, an online shop for modern stuff that you can actually get in Canada.  It’s so frustrating to read about a cool product for your house in an American magazine, only to find out they don’t ship to Canada, or the product isn’t available here.

Or, for the ultimate in Canadian interiors, check out the iconic Umbra.  Maybe treat yourself to my favourite Umbra product – the Aquala Bathub Caddy.  With a book holder and spot for your wine glass, it takes a bubble bath to the next level.

Hide The Credit Cards: Personalized Stamps

I LOVE personalized objects.  I can’t get enough of monogramming (thank you Land’s End).  I’ve been looking for a good address stamp for a while – I want one that’s pretty but not too expensive.  I really like these ones from the Etsy shop Primele, but $62 is a bit steep. I might just have to make one of my own.

Or, I could go with an embosser – my mother had one, and as a kid I used to love embossing anything I could get my hands on.  I think an embosser might be the way to go – it’s more versatile than a stamp (you can emboss paper, envelopes, napkins…).  You can order a reasonably priced embosser and a whole bunch of different plates from Paper Source.   Now to decide what plate to get – my monogram?  My first name?  My address?  So many choices…

In the ‘Hood: GUFF

Just around the corner from my house in Leslieville is a fantastic antique furniture store called GUFF.  It stands for Great Used Furniture Finds.  They have mostly mid-century modern stuff, but there are a few other things thrown in there too.  I love the pieces they bring in, and the best part is the pricing – these are seriously reasonable prices.  I check the GUFF blog regularly to see what they get in – pieces usually sell quickly (probably because of the amazing pricing), so it’s a case of the early bird getting the worm.  Have a look, or if you’re in the ‘hood, pop by the store itself at 1142 Queen St East (just west of Jones).
