Happy Mother’s Day!

6 May 2011 | 6 Comments

This Sunday is my first Mother’s Day as a Mom.  Ever since my own Mom died 9 years ago, I’ve tried to avoid Mother’s Day and pretend like it wasn’t happening.  But now with Little C on the scene, I have a whole new reason to celebrate.

She’s 6.5 weeks old now, and I feel like I’m starting to get my groove as a Mum.  I had a bit of an epiphany moment this week, when I was up at 4:30 in the morning doing yet another diaper change and feeding.  I was reading Babble’s roundup of the Top 50 Mom Blogs, and discovered a few Mommas out there that were telling it like it is, poop and all. And laughing all the way.  Alice Bradley (of Finslippy and Let’s Panic About Babies), Liz Gumbinner (of Mom 101), Heather Armstrong (of Dooce), Jenny (of The Bloggess), Jill (of Scary Mommy) and Ree Drummond (The Pioneer Woman) have liberated me.

All of these hilarious and wonderful Mommy Bloggers are my new role models.  I realized that just because I’ve had a baby does not mean I’ve had a lobotomy!  I’m still the same wise-cracking, smart-alecky, swearing, work-obsessed, opinionated and caring wife, sister, daughter, and friend that I’ve always been.  And I don’t have to change who I am to be a good mother.  As a wise friend told me, all it takes to be a good parent is “to care and try”.

So Happy Mother’s Day to all you Mommas out there.  I hope you’re keeping it real.  I admire you, and am so happy to finally be in the club.
