We’re Going to Montreal in July (With Our Toddler)

24 May 2012 | 6 Comments

We have a week of holiday time in early July, so we’ve decided to go to Montreal for 5 nights.  We rented this sweet apartment on Airbnb. It’s in the super hip, family-friendly area of Mile End/Plateau.  Looks like a great place to hang for a while, don’t you think?

It’s funny – now that we are parents, our criteria for travel and accommodation has changed so much.  Of course, we want to make sure we visit a family-friendly destination, with lots of appeal for a toddler during the day.  But it’s also important that we find a place where Ian and I can be comfortable at night, since Clara goes to bed at 6:30pm, and we’d rather not sit quietly in the dark every evening.  That’s why we picked this apartment – it looks like a lovely place to spend the evenings, drinking yummy Quebec  beer and eating yummy Quebec cheese on the terrace.

I’m sure many people think a city vacation with a little one is a bad idea, but since we live in a city, and have already visited NYC with Clara, we think nothing of going to Montreal with a kid in tow.  I’d much rather go to a city than some “family themed” vacation spot.  I’m sure we have many years of Disney World and destinations with “kids’ clubs” ahead of us though.

So, for now, this vacation will (hopefully) be a good fit.  The Montreal Jazz Festival will be on, with lots of kids’ activities.  There’s a splash pad/mini water park right across the street from our apartment rental for daily cool-offs (July is probably going to be hot), and the neighbourhood has lots of restaurants and cafes to try out.  Ian, the beer fan, is particularly happy with our close proximity to Dieu du Ciel, one of Montreal’s best microbreweries.  I’m really looking forward to it!
