Something to Try This Summer: Camping with the Kid

Before Clara was born, Ian and I loved to go camping at different provincial parks in Ontario. We’re not hardcore into backwoods camping or anything – we do “car camping”, where you pull your car up to your reserved spot so it’s much easier to pack and unload. We have a massive tent that fits our queen-size air mattress, and I have even been known to bring a duvet and feather pillows (way more cozy than sleeping bags… hey… don’t judge).

We have camped with our dogs (that’s our old dog, Robby, in the photo above) but haven’t tried camping with our kid. I think this summer it’s finally time. Clara is 3 now, potty trained, eats regular food, and sleeps somewhat regularly.  She’d probably love to explore and play in the woods, and splash in the water on a shallow beach. I think there would be enough new stuff to see and do to keep her entertained. And if the whole thing is a total gong show, we can always just pack up and drive home, right?

Have you gone camping with small children? Any tips?

Isn’t it interesting to think that not too long ago (evolutionarily speaking), camping would have been real life, and what we think of as regular life now would have been “captivity”? I think Clara is going to take to the woods and camping like a duck to water, or a human to nature 🙂

So true! She’ll love it, I’m sure. It’s her parents that are more hesitant. 🙂

We went camping for the first time last summer for 2 nights with my Mom. The only trouble was that our campsite was ringed in poison ivy… G understood & stayed away, A was a challenge. But luckily we all came out unscathed! Otherwise it went well, doing it again this year. Only at a different campground 😉

OMG poison ivy… that’s a challenge for sure. Glad you’re going to try again this year. What was your sleeping arrangement with the kids?

No littles of my own yet, but we camped a lot when I was growing up; with toddlers under 3! My advice is a feet washing bucket before littles come into the tent, jiffy pop, and lots of marshmallows. You’ll have a blast, I’m sure 🙂

Ooooooh feet washing bucket is a great idea. Sand in the tent is the worst. Great tip!
