I Made a Dress for Clara
Yup, I can sew. Kind of. Here’s the story – I purchased one of these adorable little girl’s overall dresses from Tiny Modernist at the Spring One of a Kind Show. I love the dress, and I bought one in a big size, so Clara has lots of room to grow with it. I was looking at the construction of the dress, and it seemed pretty simple, so I thought I’d try my hand at making one.
So I went to MacFab and bought these gorgeous fabrics. Since I only needed one yard of each, I splurged on some Amy Butler and Michael Miller prints:
I then used the Tiny Modernist dress (it’s the purple one, below) as a bit of a pattern, and cut out my fabric. I wish I could give you detailed step-by-step instructions, but really, I just kind of winged it, figuring it out as I went.
And here’s the finished product (and a shot of it on top of the Tiny Modernist dress that I used as a pattern – it’s a good thing that purple dress is big, since I ended up making my orange and green dress pretty small. It fits Clara perfectly now, but doesn’t have a lot of extra room). I’m pretty impressed with how it turned out. Of course, some of the seams don’t perfectly match up, and I need to do a proper hem at the bottom. And I made it pretty small – I always forget how much fabric gets taken up by seam allowances. My dress is definitely not as nice as the Tiny Modernist one, but heck, for building it from scratch, I did a pretty good job!
And here are pictures of Clara looking adorable with her new dress on. It works really well over leggings. And the best part is, I have fabric left over, so I think I’ll make a matching hat for her. I also still have the other patterned fabric (the light blue and green one) that I didn’t use at all yet. I think I’ll use that to make another dress, but I’ll probably work from an actual pattern for that one, instead of winging it. =)
Hi Avery! I’m impressed with your dress! If you ever feel like making another one, I’d be happy to show you how it’s done.
Cheryl from Tiny Modernist
Wow Cheryl, that’s a lovely offer! I think I’d rather just buy another Tiny Modernist dress – my sewing skills are nothing like yours. I love your stuff, and hope to see you at the One of a Kind Spring Show again this year.
